Historical Lense

Due to the fact that Alison was born in 1960, Fun Home is also a historical retelling. Notable events are mentioned offhand by both Alison and those around her. It can also be seen in the language and slang that we see the people use. Much of the historical context is tied into the attitudes towards queerness and gender that were most common at the time, and the two themes are closely related.

Viewing the story this way allows the reader to see history through the eyes of a normal girl, a girl preoccupied by puberty and her father's court case and life problems.
